Athletes who are fueled on low carb diets are making headway in competitive sport, setting new records, and beating their ‘carb-loaded’ competitors. This is being accomplished by utilising fat as a primary fuel source, instead of carbs. ‘Fat adapted’ athletes have taught their body how to access the energy found in body fat, which even in a lean athlete, is about 20 times as much energy as could be stored if they were fully carb loaded. This means hitting ‘the wall’ becomes a thing of the past.
Other than boundless energy, athletes who run on fat tend to:
- Become leaner without trying
- Avoid the need for energy supplements during an event (eg sports drinks and gels)
- Have fewer gastro-intestinal symptoms related to these (eg diarrhea)
